Day 21: A song from a musical

Moulin Rouge is my favorite musical. I will hear no arguments. But I always pick that.

Anna and the Apocalypse is probably my second favorite bit I’ve already done one holiday themed song and I don’t wanna get people all wound up,

This movie, Sing Street, not necessarily a musical exactly, but such a cute little movie that I recommend highly has some original bops, like this one.

Day 21: A song from a musical
My uncultured self has only been to one musical theater production, A Christmas Carol, when I was around 8. Since I dislike that story I'm going to go with a different sort of musical... I swear I'm not trying to be a hooligan!
... Well here I go risking another spank 😳

Yes! So much, yes!

Day 21: A song from a musical

I love musicals, and could do a whole thread about them, so picking one is hard. I chose one for how well it was done considering the writer not only had never written one before, he learned to play guitar just to make this.

"Once More With Feeling" is one of the first, and absolutely one of the finest, musical episodes on television. (I went to the sing-a-long showings, before Fox got pissy and closed them all down.) All of the songs are sung by the cast, move the whole narrative of the season forward, work within the genre, and are incredibly well written. And it was Joss's first musical. Say what you will about the man --and I have-- he was a talented sonofabitch.

This song is complicated. It uses the entire cast (and Hinton Battle as the Big Bad! I love him), and is full of counterpoints, series-long leitmotifs, calls back to early songs in the episode, and even a joke about Allison Hannigan not wanting to sing (her only bit in the entire episode is "I think this line's mostly filler.") And Sarah really shines.

"I touch the fire and it freezes me
I look into it and it's black
Why can't I feel
My skin should crack and peel
I want the fire back."

That connects.

"Walk Through the Fire," Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Once More with Feeling."

(Joss also said the scene with the fire trucks racing behind the cast was the most perfect thing he ever shot.)
