What Are You Listening to Now 7.0

Love Jones, such an amazing voice. Her duets are fantastic.

Norah does have a lovely voice; she is also a fine, emotive pianist, and I like everything I've heard her do. But I confess that my favorite of her stuff is what she did with The Little Willies, most especially their cover of Townes Van Zandt's (and Jimmy Driftwood's) No Place to Fall.

Shankar made the sitar a world class instrument and the influence on the Beatles. I am a huge fan of the Beatles' psychedelic period and that was largely due to Shankar

Hope you are healing well

Yes, thanks! Per yesterday's follow-up visit to the doctor, I am expected to survive! :) Everything still hurts, but it's definitely getting better.

I hope all is well with you too!

I'm a huge Emperor fan and in awe how Ihsahn has evolved his music since, but actually sitting down and digesting it? I'm afraid I'm short a couple dozen IQ points. I did like his guest feature on the first Jeff Loomis solo record.

His evolution away from Emperor has been interesting, I agree!

Visitors from Another Planet

Mark Murdock

afternoon musical Litsters, peace, love happiness and good health to you all

Fronse Vind -- Myrkur

Wonderfully simple and peaceful tune, but at under two minutes, way too short.

The wife just went full on 80's binge, so it was "Don't Go" by Yazoo... They should have been playing that last night when the forum crashed!

Radio Paradise. (Internet radio station.)

So much great stuff I heard there first. CSN is on now, Lord Huron next. Then Allen Toussaint, Doc Watson, and Emmylou Harris.

Edit: Oh lordy, Boz Scaggs' 13-minute Loan Me A Dime is on, with Duane Allman on lead, the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, and the Memphis Horns. David Gilmour, eat your heart out.

Buckle up, this will be a long one...

So, it's Friday, which means that every record label I have subscribed to on YouTube will post new stuff to listen to. Fine by me. Today's haul was pretty varied.

Likey very much:
Insomnium - The Wanderer (folky, clean vocals with just a teeny hint of growls at the end, video has A LOT of eye candy! Looking forward to the full album once it's out.)
https://youtu.be/GVqjpcvKfHY

Cradle Of Filth - Necromantic Fantasies
So far, CoF have released only one album I'd call "bad", and that was "Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa". Too much blast, not enough in the way of memorable hooks or songs. The rest of their 30-year discography has been varied and fun to listen to. This new incoming album promises more of their signature brand of clever wordplay, music oscillating between horror movie soundtracks and crust punk and ear-piercing screeches. Again, a rather eye-catching video.

Cradle Of Filth - Crawling King Chaos
An earlier teaser and quite the fast track. With a killer hookline once they start praising Apophis. Yeah, the new album promises to be fun. And a lot more pomp and circumstance. Just how I like it!

Meh
Ensiferum - Run From The Crushing Tide
I used to like Ensiferum. They had the Viking spirit, great hooks and some cool ideas, but over the past ten or so years, they fell into the same trap Sabaton or Powerwolf have fallen into - too much formula. On top of their cookie-cutter songwriting, the sound quality has decreased markedly. This sounds incredibly tinny and weak. That lead guitar GRATES! Expected more, got much less. Meh.

Thulcandra - Funeral Pyre
Germany's biggest Dissection worshippers, playing a melodic brand of fast and furious black metal. Back to 1995 or so. Problem with this is the horrible drum sound, at least for me. The cynbals sound painful! Also, the drummer plays TOO tight. A certain amount of unevenness is necessary for this style to work properly. Necrophobic play this style of noise much better!

Oh God, why me?
Beast In Black - Moonlight Rendezvous
Most of you know that I like synths AND shredding guitars. I LOVE synthwave and metal, but this particular mix is just painful.

Aephanemer - Phanta Rei
Hm, the intro riff sounds a lot like Ensiferum. Nicely mixed, well played but... that voice! Call me sexist, but I prefer my female voices in the "singing" part of noise production. I don't know the band at all, but I think this is another "Children Of Bodom" situation, where the band boss and guitarist takes on vocal duty because they couldn't find anyone else. My recommendation - especially when playing this melodic kind of stuff - GET A FUCKING SINGER WHO KNOWS THEIR SHIT!

I was about to close down my browser when another video caught my eye. I'm not the biggest fan, but I respect System Of A Down and give anything with Serj Tankian a listen. So...

Tina Guo feat. Serj Tankian - Moonhearts in Space
https://youtu.be/TSR7qr42TF4
Cello plus voice plus reverb plus a LOT of eye candy. Too artsy for my usual taste, but I can look past that. A bit less plastic and she'd be naked.

A bit of digging showed that Ms. Guo was at Wacken. And she played one of my favourite pieces of gaming music in a fucking killer version.
Tina Guo - Skyrim Intro

Yeah, that was something. Have fun!

Exit Music -- Savatage (quiet, peaceful piano solo end track of a rock album)

Roger Waters : Amused to Death

Despite Waters's odd quirks as a person - I really like this album. I just wish he'd take Zappa's advice and (figuratively) shut up 'n' play his guitar
