Why lie about the little stuff?

Well, I'm not sure of your culinary requirements, but, assuming you are lactose tolerant, how's a chocolate milkshake from my favorite eatery - they do a good one, too.

Are you psychic?

I have chocolate milkshakes for lunch nearly every day!

And, that is NO lie!

:p

I am sorry.

I am just very pissed off.

:D

Then you need "un-pissing off" LS ;)

Those who do lie...are not worth to have a nice lady like you as a friend:kiss:

Thank you, Ukin.

You are sweet, even if you want to....

and then do ....

and of course, .....

Well, you know! ;)

Yes, D.O.M., life is too short to spend sorting the tales told by someone you can't trust.

Psychic? No. Have been accused of being psychotic, but that's not accurate, either.

I seem to be on a chocolate milkshake kick right now. I do this sometimes, until I wear the kick out. It may prove difficult to wear out chocolate milkshakes though. And, it's what's for dinner!!!! Some nights, literally (others, only dessert).

I believe you. You seem to be wired like that. I look forward to picking this thread up with related tales of silly human tricks.

In a while, then....

Have you ever had someone tell you they were doing something adn couldn't be on line, only to find they have been posting?

Why lie?

One little lie tells me to be wary.

Add that to suspicions that that someone has had two lit id's and he denies it.

Why lie?

Sometimes I think that I am simply too trusting and an easy target. However, there is no reason to lie.

When you say you care, are you lying as well?

Am I the only one who has been subjected to such misleading behavior?

This is a subject I've wondered about for quite a long time... most of my life, really *s*
It started in my teen years, when I watched girls being attracted to boys who had the rap. The look, and the line of bullshit that just drew them in.

I started browsing online discussion boards... geez, must be almost 10 years ago, and I have seen this behavior over and over. One of the earliest was bianca's smut shack, then all of the related user forums that followed. There were some really great forums there and really great people, but there was also a lot of what you're talking about. Multiple identities, and deceit.
I know this post is kind of fragmented, inarticulate, and downright incoherent, I'm having one of those days. *s*

Anyway, I think my point is, I don't know why people lie, exactly, but I believe they think it helps them achieve their goal of popularity, and whether in r/l or online, people, especially women, are drawn to the guys with the rap... the line of bs.

I'm not saying all popular people are liars, but I am saying that mostl liars are popular, at least for a short time.

I used to work with a guy. We would have a few beers after work sometimes, and the BS would start. He had to top every story, and he would make it up out of whole cloth if he had to.

His best ones always started off with, "I was headin' off to Alabama in a '51 Ford, with a full tank of gas, four bald tires, no spare, and no jack...." When you heard that, it was time for the hip waders!!!

Sadly, he knew it, too.

I haven't thought of him in years, either. What a way to be remembered!

I have some associates in business who are such accomplished liars, that I sometimes wonder if they consciously know that they are lying.
They are my "friends", and I often wonder how they can really expect people to be a friend, when, seeing how they treat others... how could I not expect them to treat me with the same deceptions?

My friends are closed sometimes, and am I, but we don't lie to one another. I think liars either don't really believe anyone, or they are the easiest to lie to.

This man lied routinely, but the additon of alcohol exascerbated the condition greatly. Ever heard any obvious whoppers at a bar? I have, and more than one, too.

An observation base on Manofsteel's posts

AFter having been at lit a while, it seems to me that the liars don't last long in popularity or even in staying here.

When I think about those that seem to have large followings and longevity, it is the truth tellers. Even some who's mode of telling the truth is caustic and sharp, they seem to have developed their own popularity base.

Just an observation that at lit, truth telling is what achieves some of those goals that liars have.

I do believe people often lie to make themselves look good or to make themselves feel good. In my professional and personal life, there are many I know who lie and truly believe their lies. I can't imagine living like that! These same people are constantly stressed, trying to make reparations or cover those lies and seem dumbfounded. Yes, they need meds. :)

As for other online stuff, for some we are pauns in an elaborate chess game. Some Women collect admirers as do men. It makes them feel good, even if it is based on bs. Admittedly, I enjoy the attention of my friends and acquaintences at lit and otherwise on line. But isn't it so much more meaningful as I know that is someone sends me a message saying, "I like your posts. You are an interesting person," that it is based on truth?

OH well....my thoughts wander adn I shall wander back to the coffee pot!

:D

Did someone say Coffee????

Coffee....one of my favorite words, and the Nectar of the Gods, in my less-than-humble opinion!!!!

Good idea, MissT....think I'll do likewise.

I agreewith much of what you say, except that I don't think that the popularity of a liar is necessarily short lived. I have known some incredibly accomplished liars in my time, some whos relationship with me were short lived, others whom I thought were my best friends for about 15 years.

I've developed a new appreciation for the wisdom of my grandfather when he would say.... "don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see...."

MissT......

one more thing. I know this is probably just a coincidence, but I have to ask....
there was a delightfully delectable MissT at bianca's some years ago. She started one of the first, and one of my all time favorite online forums.
You wouldn't be............?

No dear. It wouldnt' be me, but I am very flattered to think you might lump me into that sort of company...delightful and delectable.

Actually, cream only (milk does fine, too). I dropped the sugar years ago - like maybe 20.

I'll drink weak coffee black.

I have to say I appreciate your insight too. I too have had many "friends" that were regular fish story tellers.. In business these days it is really hard to tell who exactly the person is your dealing with. They seem to change with the tide. But they all seem to have long careers as professional story tellers. Look at our current financial market and what a few liars have done to the ecomony.

MissTaken, mmmmmm fresh ground starbucks was just poured into my cup.......

I declined, but you've gone and opened the box now!!!

This mid-life revolutionary is about sick to death of the BS promoted by both major political parties today. Grover Cleveland was elected president in spite of the rumors of his out-of-wedlock child (which happened to be true). His response? "So what." We could use some of that today!!!!

You cannot legislate honesty!!!!

That's enough.

no you can't, and we as individuals can only make a difference if we are honest people. There will always be those that tell stories, go after the chase and leave, but those who are truly interested in making a difference can be assured their lives will have a much higher quality by sticking to their principles.

Marty

Second cup please............

I agree, almost....I do feel one person can make a difference, but more make it easier.

As to the disagreement: second POT, please!!!

Starbucks?

*sigh*

The closest Starbucks is about 5 hours away from me.

No, you can't legislate honesty.
You can try by voting in those politicians who seem to be honest. Are there any?

Here is the question though....

Can you ever be 100 percent honest?
Is there anyone who always tells the truth?

I bide by the 99.999999999999999% theory of honesty. There are times when you just can't do it.

"Does this skirt make me look fat?"

The honest answer? "Yes, hon. You are fat and can't hide it."

The dishonest answer? "No babe. You look great!"

Of course, the best answer? "You look great." Evade the fat issue. But, what if I dont' look great?

Babbling...too much java on this Saturday morn!

Point taken. But is it really a lie to try and boost someones ego or personal self worth. The example you sited I have done many times. I was not just being nice, it was an attempt to improve the persons self image. Which in turn was benificial to the relationship and continued to cultivate love and understanding.

Awe, we have starbucks beans at the local market and I grind my own..........

Now to learn to make a cafe mocha.

No, darlin', the skirt doesn't make you look fat because you're not fat. Not through my eyes.
Here's the thing. When telling the technical truth will serve no purpose other than to hurt someone, then lie. But most times these lies may be rationalized in such a manner that the become.... un-lies...?
:D

I think the 99.9>% threshold is acceptable.

The best way to handle the skirt issue is to answer carefully, like, "I like the red one better," or, of course, ifyou like that one, simply, as you said, "yes," and leave the fat issue alone.

BTW, which of us has wonderful body image? And, if someone compliments us honestly, because they think so, are we not heedless and cruel to denigrate their compliment? But, I digress....this is about honesty!!!!

I'd give a select body part for another Jefferson or Webster!!!!
