Any of a range of bad behaviors. I am kind of different in that I can respect someone for something (a skill, a talent, an aspect of their personality) and still not like them for some other thing.

I can't think of anyone I've lost respect for, but that is mainly because a person has to be/do something extraordinary for me to Respect them (as opposed to just common courtesy). I have an example - I worked with a customer director once on a major project. He was, simply put, an ass-hat. But, when it came down to time to do some hard and difficult things, he stepped up. He was still an asshat, but I respected him for that willingness to take a stand.

For me, if I see anyone being mean or disrespectful to others or me, than I have no use for them. I like to keep things simple like that. :)

When someone puts down a group, women, for instance, and then says, Oh, I didn’t mean you! You’re different!

Suck it.

Like JJade says, anyone who hurts my friends, purposely.

Anyone who doesn’t respect my boundaries.

That’s about it. I don’t respect too many people to begin with. I like a lot of people, and would have a beer with them, but respect is harder to earn.

For me, it's all about how they treat other people. If you're an asshole for no reason other than that's who you are? No respect. Taking advantage of others? No respect. Being selfish, while knowing that hurts someone who did nothing wrong? No respect.

I can't look at someone knowing that they treat people poorly and respect them even a little. Professionally or personally.

And that sucks. Because you have to EARN my respect first. It's not freely given, ever. So if earn it and THEN lose it? Fuck you.

Two faced people. People who aren’t genuine. Those who are mean to others just for the hell of it. Those people lose my respect very quickly.

I’m with Paul and Fara. My deep admiration is not easily earned. It’s consistency over an extended period of time. To lose my respect? Repeated behavior that is in direct opposition to one’s values.

It takes very little sometimes, just an off hand comment or behavior that indicates who they really are. Not following through on something also shows their true colors.

If you could be anywhere in the world right now for the rest of the day, where would you go? You can't take or leave anything and no one will notice your absence.

Cozumel. SCUBA diving followed by Margaritas

Two things:

Lie to me.

Assume you get my respect because of who you are, not what you do.

I think most everyone covered the common ones that I agree with. I don't like abusers. I don't like thieves.

One of the more unusual ones that will slowly chip away my respect is the inability to admit the possibility that one may be incorrect, biased, etc, even when shown evidence that may indicate the contrary. The simple version of people who just dig in and not only can not admit being incorrect, but can't even admit they might not be fully correct and there might be other valid ideas, because I guess it is damaging to their ego to not know everything. Or the needing to cling to what one believes thus refusing to be open to or to see any other possibility, when what they are clinging to is inherently detrimental to those around them.

I don't know, I guess it is because the only way one can ever grow, adapt, or change is to admit there might be a better way and to try it, to admit they may not have all the information and to explore it, to be open to possiblities and adapt. Otherwise, all there is is complete stagnation.

I guess closed mindedness is the easiest way to put it and that is something that I think many people will overlook but that just really whittles away at my respect for someone.

I lose respect for someone that assumes they know me when they don't. Those that blatantly lie to me. Anyone that hurts my kids or family. I'm sure there's more.

I've really enjoyed everyone's thoughts here and how we all view respect slightly differently.

For me -

*putting other people down to make yourself look better
*remaining with a partner that actively treats you like shit (especially a secondary partner)
*being an information vampire (this is nosey x10)
*being prejudice against anyone for anything other than the way they act

What's that saying? "Someone who's nice to you but rude to the waiter is not a nice person"? Being rude to people just because you can is a quick and easy way to lose my respect.

People who lie to further themselves
People with no generosity of spirit (think only of themselves)
People who are unkind to anyone, especially wait staff. That's a big indicator)

How to lose my respect -

Treat people poorly.
Always have to be right.
Be a hypocrite.
Never apologize.
Be manipulative.
Don't have empathy.
Be selfish.
Shame others.
Be lazy.

I'd like to also add -

The inability to see when you're wrong or admit to it.

People who lie to further themselves
People with no generosity of spirit (think only of themselves)
People who are unkind to anyone, especially wait staff. That's a big indicator)

The only thing I'll add to what these above beautiful ladies have expressed is someone who always has to be right and fails to recognize the importance of knowing when to let it be and move on.

So many good ones already. I think lying is my #1 pet peeve.

I don't care how bad things are, or how much you think i won't want to hear something, or how much easier it would be not to tell me...

Don't fucking lie to me.

What makes you lose respect for someone?

People that look down their noses at other people.

People that make themselves feel better by knocking other people down a peg or two.

People that give zero fucks about anything that doesn’t impact on them personally.

People that play the victim for something that’s essentially their fault rather than take responsibility.
