🎵 Monthly Song Challenge 🎵

I learned something from this prompt suggestion! The #1 single on Christmas Day is a coveted spot in the UK. It’s a little murkier and harder to find for the US without going year by year, so feel free to use the top charts for any country.

This link is a Wikipedia compilation list of the UK ones.
This is a Spotify compilation for the US, I can’t speak to how accurate it is.
If you use one of these links or find a different resource, please quote or link for others 🥰

Day 20: A song that was #1 on Christmas but is not a holiday song

JCB Song - Nizlopi
Controversial... was it #1 on xmas day? yes and no.
The song reached #1 on 18 December... the new #1 was announced in the afternoon of Xmas day, so, technically, this was still #1 until the announcement.

Anyway... it's beautiful. At a time when the chart was dominated by manufactured music from a "talent" show, this provided some relief

"and we're holding up the bypass"

the video is a total joy and encapsulates what xmas is for kids, the joy of family.

i'm not crying...

This was fun!! Like the previous #1 hit prompt this made me scroll through decades of #1 hits, but honing in on December. Found this gem, gosh, it was truly everywhere... First song to popularize autotune! And mfghfmghhh she was/is so damn gorgeous.. 🥵

#1 Hits in Sweden, week by week.

1987 A song that should never have been No1.
It's widely recognised that 'Fairytale of New York' sold more records but was considered unsuitable, by the people who compile the charts, as a Xmas no1 because of the language. Thus it was No2 and the Pet Shop boys were No1.
The same happened in 1977 to the Sex Pistols. 🙄😄

I love this song because it is a cover of an Elvis (and Willie Nelson) song. Did Pogues fans protest?

This is why I come here, over and over. This is why I love this thread so much. What an utterly remarkable song. Had I not come here, there is no way I would know that song existed. Now I do, and I am smiling, and better for hearing it. Music makes all the difference. Thank you.

Britain has given the world some of the greatest cultural high points ever. Amazing music. Amazing theater. Amazing TV. They are often held as being the font of culture in the West. They are a shining star of culture and refinement.

They also embrace the novelty song. Mr. Blobby was a minor character on a BBC Saturday night variety show, a parody of such characters from kids shows. To quote the great Bob Mortimer, Mr Blobby was a "pink, spotty, rubber twat." And he had the #1 song on Christmas Day in 1993.

Don't ever stop, Britain.

"Mr. Blobby," Mr. Blobby (#1 1993)

I don't think so, made a few headlines at the time but no-one that fussed
I would think most Pogues fans wouldn't have cared, other than to take the piss out of the pop establishment. (As I remember, the BBC looked down their noses at their name as well )
