I think that’s a good approach. It my extended family someone is designated as the coordinator (usually outside the immediate circle of mourners). Their “job” is to coordinate support through the mourning period.That's a good idea! Have the best friend be in charge of a sign-up sheet. Just give them her number!

I’m not sure where it originates from, probably a mix of the two cultures (Native American and Great Plains). We also have a set mourning period (1 year) with structured events and roles.
