Yep. Her team is the Edmonton Oilers. Their biggest nemesis is the Calgary Flames 4 hours south. They hate each other. Hard for Americans to really get their head around this rivalry. Anyway...they both were going to be in the playoffs...but the last game decided who they would play. If the Oilers won...they would play the Flames, and the Oilers really were the better team and could win that series...setting themselves up for a long run. It had been years since they were even in the playoffs. If they lost, they were going to play a team that was way tougher. You don't want long series at the beginning of Sir Stanley. Anyway...they didn't play many of their team guaranteeing a loss. I told her it was stupid. That it sets the mentality that the Flames could beat them. She said they could. Long story short. Flames won the first round...Oilers lost in 7. I was stupid...and laughed. She blew up. We didn't talk for years.

Hey...they are passionate about hockey. The first time I flew in to see her...looking out the window you see hockey rinks like you'd see pools in LA. She didn't believe me that I skated...so we walked down to the corner rink and amazingly...they needed one more for a pickup game. Stupid me. Little did I know...she set it up. They beat the living shit out of me. But I kept skating and getting up. God we fucked like rabbits that night...and she couldn't stop laughing. Never criticize a Canadian fan's team calling them pussies

Like most British schoolchildren of my generation, I only had the option of one European language to study to age 16: French. I barely passed, but that rudimentary knowledge has since been useful for understanding the development of the English language from its varied roots in Old High Saxon, Old Norse, Brythonic, the Celtic and Pict languages and the recent Commonwealth absorptions.
